Economic Development District
The Economic Development Administration (EDA) is a federal agency providing grants to communities to generate new employment, retain existing jobs, assist economically-distressed communities and stimulate industrial and commercial growth. EDA assistance is available to rural and urban areas and has traditionally focused on communities experiencing high unemployment, low income, or other severe economic distress. The stated mission is to “lead the federal economic development agenda by promoting innovation and competitiveness, preparing American regions for growth and success in the worldwide economy.”
Serving as the Economic Development District (EDD) for Boone, McHenry, and Winnebago Counties, Region 1 Planning Council is a bridge to the Economic Development Administration. R1 coordinates the regional Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS) plan by involving professional staff, the governing board, a subject matter strategy committee, and both the public and private sector. This qualifies participants to apply for federal economic development funding.
When local economic development opportunities arise that align with both EDA and CEDS priorities, staff assist local government and non-profit organizations with application to the appropriate funding opportunity.
R1 pursues economic development funding to create and retain jobs or grow community wealth. We work with local governments or other entities to apply for economic development grants. Projects may include:
-
Infrastructure improvements directly tied to job creation and retention
-
Workforce training
-
Economic development planning
-
And more!
